Live Presentation via Zoom

Transgender health is the next frontier in medicine. From prevalence rates estimated at 1 in 10,000 just 10 years ago to rates of 1 in 80 today, transgender individuals are more visible than ever before, and with this increased visibility comes the stark recognition of the lack of appropriate research and data to describe the experience and needs of this varied group of individuals. With a focus on gender identity development and expression in childhood and adolescence, Dr. Janssen will begin with a review of what is known about the differential developmental trajectories regarding gender identity and expression, and the development of the concept of gender diversity and gender dysphoria. Dr. Janssen will then review the evidenced-based practices in assessment of gender dysphoria in youth and highlight the current standards of care in recommending social, medical and surgical interventions for transgender and gender diverse youth. This talk will highlight the controversies of the various approaches and the relevance across cultures.
