Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Understanding Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that helps you identify problematic thought patterns and better understand how those thoughts affect your feelings and behaviors. It was developed in the 1960’s by a psychiatrist, Dr. Aaron Beck. Today, Silver Hill is one of the top CBT treatment centers. We use this evidence-based therapy in groups, to help manage a variety of mental illnesses including substance abuse and psychotic disorders.

What You Can Achieve

As you go through CBT, you will:

  • Identify what is troubling you, such as a medical condition, relationship problems or mental illness symptoms.
  • Discuss your thoughts and beliefs about the problems you are facing or life in general.
  • Identify any negative or inaccurate thoughts about the problem(s) that may be contributing to your emotional distress.
  • Determine ways you can reshape your troublesome thoughts, beliefs and problematic behaviors so they have less power in your life.

Patient Experience

Unlike other forms of therapy, CBT is a short-term psychotherapy. However, if you have persistent mental illness, you may wish to include regular CBT sessions in your ongoing treatment after discharge, in order to manage and minimize symptoms.
